Sleds are used to travel across snow. The most common type is to go sledding downhill on snow from a
higher elevation. The first ride down a hill on a sled is the most important, but most difficult,
as it determines the path of the sled for further runs down the hill. It is essential to steer the sled
along the most exciting course, perhaps adding twists and turns to make the run down the hill more exciting,
or faster! With each course down the hill, the sled's path through the snow becomes more icy.
After several runs down a hill, the path will be very slick. This adds to the enjoyment of sledding.
There are many different type of sledding. You don’t need to go downhill when sledding but you will
need something to pull the sled on a flat surface. One such way is with a dog sled.
This is more popular in places such as Alaska. There are a number of dogs pulling the sled and the
rider can control the sled through the dogs. Sledding and dogsledding tours are relatively inexpensive.
If you think a sled is too slow for you, then try a snowmobile. Some people call snowmobiles “sleds” so
it’s appropriate to place them in the same category. These are motor vehicles designed to travel through
snow and ice. Depending on the type of model, these snowmobiles can travel as fast as 50 MPH but some racing
models with more powerful engines can travel up to 120 MPH. Most snowmobiles are $3000-6000.
Snowmobiles are expensive but if you want to try the experience, some places have them for rent.
